Saul, King of Israel (1990)
Saul, King of Israel (1990)
Commissioned by the Meadows Foundation in honor of the Robert E. Weiss family.
Originally a full-length, three act work. In 2006, the composer began a revision which is still in progress. Ultimately the work will be in one act with no intermission lasting approximately one hour and 45 minutes. The six leading characters are: Saul, King of Israel (bass baritone), Samuel the Prophet (bass), David, the young warrior and future king (tenor), High Priest (bass), Witch of Endor (contralto), Jonathan, Saul's son (baritone), and mixed chorus.
The third act of the original version was premiered by the Southern Methodist University Opera Theatre Department in May of 1991.
