Simon Sargon :: Vocal Works :: Solo voice(s) with keyboard
Jump Back (1965, rev. 1986)
High solo voice/piano. Five texts of the poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. A selection of poetry from one of the greatest African-American poets this country has produced. The songs run the range from his intentionally humorous poetry in dialect to his serious contemplation of creativity and death.

Let It Be You (1988)
Soprano/piano. Five poems of Sara Teasdale evoking the loneliness of the troubled poet. Poignant and touching, they paint a musical portrait of the artist's isolation.

Like Gentle Rain (2000)
Baritone/organ. The last words of Moses from Deuteronomy 32: 1-4 in which he tells the Israelites that his teachings will remain with them, nourishing them like the "drops of rain" replenish the dry earth. Even though God has denied Moses the privilege of leading the Israelites into the Promised Land, Moses proclaims his belief in a just and righteous God.

Loveliest of Trees (1993)
Tenor/piano. Six of the brief, yet intense, poems of A. E. Houseman which celebrate nature and the passage of time, replete with the regretful feelings of missed opportunities.

Our price: $20.00

Madam, I'm Adam (2004)
Soprano/baritone/piano. Settings of eight palindromes. The idea of the palindrome (words that are the same backwards and forwards) is mirrored in the music: once the musical midpoint has been reached, the notes "go backward." The palindromes themselves are humorous sentences often verging on the nonsensical. Fanciful and fun to hear and perform.

Our price: $15.00

Take Five (1969)
Medium voice/piano. Five entertaining songs of the American humorist, Samuel Hoffenstein. Though influenced by the wit and deadpan put-downs of Dorothy Parker's poetry, Hoffenstein successfully created his own voice with droll, tongue-in-cheek observations. An excellent closing group of songs which introduces lightness and levity to a program or recital.

Voices at the Window (1998)
Soprano/baritone/piano. Text by Sir Philip Sydney, an English Renaissance poet. The lady wonders who is serenading her from beneath her window. Her passionate lover identifies himself and entreats her to let him in. In contrast to Brahms' "Vergebliches Standchen" in which one singer interprets both characters, this serenade is an actual duet and is presented more like a miniature opera scene.

Our price: $10.00

Waves of the Sea (1990)
Six Irish poems set for medium voice and keyboard. Winner, First Prize in National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Competition, 1993. Recorded on the CD A Clear Midnight (Gasparo, 333).

Our price: $20.00
